How Safe Liposuction Is?

According to Wikipedia, liposuction is a cosmetic surgery that removes fat from many different sites on the human body.

Most often, liposuction is performed on the abdomen and thighs in women, and the abdomen and flanks in men. The procedure itself involves inserting a tube (cannula) into areas that contain fat and using a suction device (aspirator) to draw the fat out of the body through the tube. Most often, liposuction also involves injecting fluids into the area where fat is removed, to loosen the fat cells and provide salts and localized anesthesia to reduce internal strain.

Liposuction evolved from work in the late 1960's from surgeons in Europe using primitive techniques. By 1980, liposuction was extremely popular in the United States. As the technology advances, liposuction procedures also improved.

Removal of very large volumes of fat is a complex and potentially life-threatening procedure, the more fat removed, the higher the surgical risk. Many surgeons and patients believe it is safer to limit the amount of liposuction done in one day and avoid doing liposuction with unrelated cosmetic surgeries on the same day.

Although liposuction is very popular nowadays, not everyone is a good candidate for this surgery. A good candidate is a person who has realistic expectations, in good health and is likely to be happy with the results.

Risks Often Outweigh Benefits

As with any surgery, there are certain risks, beyond the temporary and minor side effects and the surgeon should mention them during a consultation. Risk of complication is usually associated with how large the procedure is, as well as the surgeons skills and specific training.

Liposuction is the most common cosmetic operation in the United States and the United Kingdom. Over 400,000 procedure are carried out in the US each year. Cost of liposuction is an important factor when considering this kind of surgery. However, the quality is more important than its cost. Choosing a liposuction surgeon based on the lowest price might ultimately the most expensive choice. If the initial results are bad, you will need to pay another surgeon to repair the work of the first liposuction surgeon.
